We're off and running! Here's our list of "150 things to do throughout the year in Austin." Most of these activities can be done throughout the year. Of course there'll be a few special dates, like our annual events and winter activities. Have fun in Austin, Nevada!
Week 11:
The Austin musuem is now on summer hours. Visit Wally and tour our phenomenal Musuem! Join us for tri-tip BBQ at noon the day of the car show. (anytime we have tri-tip throughout the year, it's a good time to visit!)Make plans to attend the Lincoln Highway Car Show, rain or shine.
Week 10:
Have a BBQ picnic at the Austin Park. Iinvite the whole family and play a little baseball. Visit the American Legion Building (it used to be the Town Hall Building.) Find the Ghost Town of Amador and post pictures for everyone.
Week 9:
Since the weather has been so nice the past few days, find a bench on main street, sit down and enjoy the nice weather, and wave at the tourists. Start at the top of town by Salsburys and see how far out in the valley you can go (we made it half way up Mount Aire) Make plans to go to the Austin Pub for a little DJ Music, Karaoke, and tri-tip for dinner.
Week 8:
Tour the oldest remaining Catholic Church in Nevada. For more information, call 775-964-1100.
Driving Tour: Take Highway 722 from the Middlegate/Shoe Tree side, and drive the road that goes over to Berlin/Ichthyosaur. Circle back and visit Austin for dinner!
Visit all our turquoise shops in Austin!! Every one of them has amazing stuff.
Week 7:
Find and name the oldest "Bank Building" in Nevada.
Visit Jacobsville, one of the first settlements in Reese River Valley, and find the rock foundations.
Drive out on the Grass Valley Road, travel 12 miles and view the "new" McGuinenness Hills Geothermal Plant.
Week 6:
Visit all the local turquoise shops and learn about Nevada turquoise.
Drive to Eureka and tour the opera house and musuem.
Tour the Austin Episcopal Church. For more info call the Chamber at 775-964-2200.
Week 5:
Go out to Reese River for some wildlife viewing. See antelope, deer, and maybe even some mountain sheep.
Find all 11 sites and buildings in Austin that are listed on the National Registry of Historic sites.
Try a little rock hounding in the area, and look for some local turquoise.
Week 4:
Find all 5 Pony Express Stations in Lander County.
Visit the Historical International Café and Bar.
Go down to the Austin Rodeo Grounds and view the remains of the turn-table for the Nevada Central Railroad (look for the National Registry sign.)
Go to Stokes Castle and view some awesome Sunsets.
Visit the five historic cemeteries (please keep the gates closed.)
Take the Stokes Castle Loop Drive, with a possible side trip to the Apex Mine and down to Big Creek road, and back to Austin.
Go to Spencer Hot Springs and relax in the hot pools.
Do a bar crawl and visit all 5 bars!
Attend the Coyote Derby this weekend. For more information, call 775-224-95145.
Drive up over the giant “A” just above Austin, and get a bird’s eye view of the town. Make sure to bring your camera.
Visit the Austin Courthouse and look for ghosts!
Take Highway 722 over Carroll’s Summit to Austin. SR722 is part of the original Lincoln Highway.
